Weekend trip

It's hard to believe that it's already been a month since our weekend getaway to celebrate Daddy's birthday. We just went to a tiny town less than an hour away, but it's home to a miniscule beach that's perfect for small children, a water park, and a cool state park. We enjoyed all that we did, but mostly we enjoyed just focusing on our little family without any agendas, to-do lists, or social obligations.

Our first stop was the beach, of course. This particular beach is so tiny it's almost laughable. But it was just our speed because there were no waves, which meant Hope and Grant could just walk right in. Hope had fun in the water (spinning back and forth with the Motor Boat rhyme that Grandma taught us), but she mostly enjoyed the sand. Grant, on the other hand, was wild about the water. It helped that he had water shoes to control the ick factor :)

The place where we stayed is a resort that hails from the 1890's, when people left the city and headed to the beach by train and steamboat. There were some pretty interesting historical things to study, but of course, they weren't of any interest at all to H&G. What did interest them was the live music that played at the restaurant on the pier both nights. Grant busted a move, much to the crowd's delight! Hope was twirly when nobody was looking, but a little shy for the crowd. But she loosened up when Daddy danced with her. He's such a good sport to slow dance with his little girl in front of a crowd of strangers :)

We'd read that the nearby state park had some cliffs over the water that were full of fossils. Who knew there were tons of dinosaurs around here? We were eager to check it out, but it turns out the hike to the cliffs was more than we were prepared for. We'll definitely go back with the appropriate shoes and backpack carrier! Fortunately, it wasn't too much of a let down because they had a pretty good tire park there. Despite the scorching heat that day (100+), we had fun!

When we left the ridiculous heat of the park, we headed straight to the water park. It was definitely THE way to spend such a hot afternoon. Hope loved going around and around the lazy river on our double inner tube, and going down all the little slides in the kids area. Grant mostly liked the little fountains that spurt water up in the most shallow end of the pool.

Grant and I stayed at the hotel for naptime while Daddy and Hope had a date. They went for ice cream ("chocolate and plain," of course) and got a manicure for Hope. It was such a big day, we ended up ordering pizza to our room for dinner and watching movies in bed :)

Our final morning there, we left the resort after filling up at the most elaborate breakfast buffet I've ever seen. Grant had a tough time - I think it bothered him that Daddy and I kept getting up and going into the other room (where the food was). He tends to get clingier when his sleep schedule is off, and it certainly was! Hope, on the other hand, was in seventh heaven. She enjoyed her breakfast, but when the guy manning the fruit table make her a rose out of skewered green grapes and a carved strawberry ... well. That sealed the deal!

We hit up a playground for awhile, and much to our kids' delight, it included a spinning wheel. Hope declared that she'd seen them in books and on TV, but she'd never actually seen one in person!

Our last adventure was a little kayaking. Turns out Hope does not enjoy it, and makes it hard for me (the pilot of her kayak) to enjoy it either. I'm still not sure what the difference is between being in a kayak and a canoe (which she enjoyed). Alas. It wasn't the best ending to our trip, but overall it was a sweet weekend with plenty of good memories made!

I agree with C - you are doing a great job here. This blog will be pricelss to H & G in the years to come. Wish I'd had more on the ball for you and Kate.....
This looks like a great place and it seems that, as usual, you guys made it FUN.
