Niagara Falls has been on our list of places to visit for a couple of years. It's within driving distance, it sounds pretty incredibly, and we thought the kids would be into it. When it turned out that I had to go to Rochester, NY for work, it seemed like a great opportunity to go just a bit further and see Niagara.
First of all, Hope and Grant thought it was pretty awesome that we would be stepping across the border into another country, and that they had to get passports! I think for them, the novelty of leaving the US was the coolest part of the whole trip.
We'd gotten some advice about where to stay, and while the house we rented was cute and suited our needs nicely, it was right in the middle of the touristy area and that's just not our style. The waterfalls themselves were definitely amazing, but otherwise, everything felt crowded and busy and expensive and surprisingly run-down. We were all a bit disappointed. But, as usual, Hope and Grant had a blast exploring the rental house and playing pretend in the closets and pantries! Ha!
On our last day, we went just a little out of the way to see the Niagara wine country. Turns out, that's the area we should have focused our attentions on! Cool historical sites, cute little villages, and many more options for good food and exploring. Oh well, now we know! Still, I'm glad we went. I'm glad we saw the waterfalls (from just about every angle, for about $100 per angle). And I'm glad that we can have fun wherever we go!
There's a pretty fantastic kid's museum in Pittsburg that we explored on the way home, and we all had a great time there. The kids learned to love the Drury Inn when we'd go visit Great-Grandad in St. Louis, so we booked a room at the Drury in Pittsburg. Even though it's just a hotel, they love the pool and the afternoon snacks, and the ample free food. Being the parents on vacation can be exhausting, but it never gets old seeing things in a fresh way through the kids' eyes!
