There are those who are into "political correctness" just for the sake of it. There are those who don't give a care. We fall in the middle, not obsessing but trying to be polite and gracious and all that good stuff.
But I think my early lessons in political correctness are lost on Hope. A couple of weeks ago we were talking about Pocahontas. Hope called her an Indian over and over again, and finally I explained that we should call Pocahontas a Native American. Hope just looked at me like I was confused.
Today I asked Hope if she noticed that woman in Target who only had one leg. Here's how that conversation went.
Hope: Mo-om! People have TWO legs!
Me: Usually they do, but some people only have one. And some people don't have any!
Hope: [long pause, big eyes, small mouth] Do they just roll around?!
Maybe I'll be glad we had this conversation the next time we see someone with less than two legs. Maybe I won't be!
