First Days of 3rd and Kindergarten

We have all been looking forward to school starting this year. Hope was eager to get back to her friends, and also because in 3rd grade they move upstairs AND get to join the strings band! Grant was eager to start kindergarten ever since he got a glimpse of it during the "preview" back in the spring. I was eager because I knew both kids would love it and thrive with the extra stimulation, and I was ready to have more time for myself.

All summer we anticipated school starting, and when it got to within a month then Hope made a count-down stack of numbered cups :) They were pumped about buying school supplies, and new sneakers, and stuffing their backpacks. We laughed a lot about how Grant used to call his backpack his "pancake" when he was about 3-years-old. Sigh.

They picked out their first day of school clothes - mostly only Hope cared about that though. But she really cared! She thought her short diamond crusted jean shorts and cherry crop top with a tank top underneath was SUCH a cool outfit. Then we went to their open houses and met the teachers, saw the classrooms, and celebrated who was in their classes with them. The excitement was almost too much to bear for them.

But on the morning of the big day, Grant suddenly wasn't so sure. After three years of watching Hope ride off in the bus, it was finally his turn, and he was nervous. He said he would miss me, and I knew I would miss him. Fortunately, he didn't cling or resist, but he did get a little teary when he boarded the bus. He looked at us from the window but didn't wave or smile. It was hard on me!

(This is what they did when I asked them to show me how they'd greet me when they got off the bus that afternoon!)

Fortunately, once they got to school it sounds like Grant and Hope both had a great day! They were all smiles when they got home, and indulged my profusion of questions. Grant has been happy to go each day this week, and sounds like he's comfortable and adjusting well. Hope is tickled to have her best buddy, Jocelyn, in class with her this year. She's also enjoying meeting some new friends in her class, and hopefully will have a sweet and peaceful time at school again this year.
