So long, 1st and 4th!

The last weeks of school are always a blur of activity. Projects to finish, violin and chorus concerts, final karate classes and baseball games, field day, teacher gifts, swim team practice, and for me it also means doing what I can to get a little ahead with Macaroni Kid work. This year was a little more harried than in the past, just because we ended up being a bit over-committed on sports and activities. I think we were all a bit relieved to see some of those come to an end!

Both Hope and Grant ended the school year with fantastic report cards - above grade level in math and reading, and lots of A's and 1's. They also made some great friendships this year, tried some new things, and grew in areas like independence, self-control, and perseverance. Daddy and I are very proud!

The last day of school was somewhat overshadowed by Hope having an issue with her heat-sensitivity which required a call to 911 and me driving 100 miles per hour to get to her. In the end, it wasn't a very big deal - she wasn't hydrated, and she was outside in the humidity and heat, packed together with a bunch of other kids, doing the Flag Day ceremony around the flagpole. She felt like she might faint a couple of times, finally was escorted by a teacher into the health room, where she did actually faint. Unfortunately, this isn't so unheard of for her or me. But the nurse thought there was more to it, and described that it looked like a seizure to her, so she called the paramedics. Then me. I ran out on my meeting, drove as fast as I could, and ran in to find her strapped to the gurney looking scared but well.

And she was fine, thank God. So were the other handful of kids who ended up in similar conditions. Something about the heat and how close they were crammed in I guess really did a number on them. So after talking it over with the paramedic and school nurse, I brought Hope home and kept her cool and hydrated. But it wasn't the last day of school she had envisioned, and it sure made me nervous about her scheduled week at sleep away camp the following week ...
